PG/VG Ratio Looks Can Be a Bit Deceiving

If you’ve been a sub-ohm vaper for a while, you might be set on a very specific VG/PG ratio that you feel produces the most satisfying vaping experience. Many vapers make the mistake of trying to find that same ratio once they switch to a salt-based e-liquid.

For those new to the world of pod-based vaping, you can certainly relax a bit when it comes to the amounts of vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) that are in your e-juice. As you’ll see, salt nicotine juice is very different from freebased juice in many ways.

What’s the Difference Between Nic Salt and Freebases E-Juices?

Not too long ago, e-liquid was only made with freebase nicotine, a type of nicotine that’s chemically modified to be more potent. This type of nicotine feels very harsh when it’s heated to a high temperature, as it isn’t made for the powerful sub-ohm devices that we have today. Now, thankfully, we have salt-based nic, a form of nicotine that feels very smooth on the inhale.

Salt-based nicotine is a bit more finicky, meaning that it can’t be used at any old wattage or temperature. That’s why you can only use this type of batch with a pod mod. It’s also why you can’t experiment as much with the ratio of VG to PG.

Does the Ratio Matter with Salt Nic E-Liquid?

While freebased e-liquids come in a huge variety of ratios, you’ll struggle to find nic salt juices that aren’t 50/50 VG/PG.

Below, you’ll find out why:

  • Throat Hit: If you’re used to high PG freebased e-liquids because you crave that throat hit, you’ll be pleased to know that salt nic deliver a powerful punch to the throat regardless of their PG level. Salt-based nicotine provides a strong throat hit, simply because of its nature.
  • Flavor: High PG e-liquids are associated with a purer, more intense flavor. However, because nic salts can only be used with mouth-to-lung (MTL) devices, you’ll experience that potent flavor no matter what.
  • Cloud Production: Many sub-ohm enthusiasts opt for high VG e-liquids because they want to blow massive clouds. These high VGs are most compatible with high-wattage units and sub-ohm coils. Those of you who are cloud chasers, realize that you’re just not gonna get those clouds with salt nic e-liquids due to the devices that they’re compatible with. Therefore, a high VG nic salt juice won’t make a difference in terms of cloud production.
  • Device: The biggest reason why the VG/PG ratio of your salt nic e-liquid doesn’t matter that much is because the devices that these juices are compatible with don’t really allow lots of wiggle room. Many of these units have set wattage and coil resistance levels. That’s because salt nic e-juice only vapes properly at a certain temperature. Therefore, the 50/50 ratio of nic salt juices is ideal for these devices.

No Need to Obsess Too Much

As you can see, there’s really no need to obsess over different VG/PG ratios of salt nicotine e-liquids. Unlike freebased e-juices, these types of juices really shouldn’t deviate from a 50/50 base. This base allows you to enjoy that blissful hit of nicotine with every inhale.
